A broader definition, perhaps? It’s still a behavior worth questioning. Moreover, we should never forget that Catherine’s problem was not trusting her intuition or I’m A Good Mom I Just Cuss A Lot Shirt asking questions about what really happened. Catherine gets lost in some absurd fantasy, Henry tells her in a I’m A Good Mom I Just Cuss A Lot Shirt very polite way that her ideas are bullshit, and he gets accused of mansplaining? When he is the actual expert on the subject? I think this is off base. Henry’s lecture to Catherine isn’t mansplaining – he’s literally right as to his father not being a murderer. As to the subtler question of her intuition, Henry later recognises that Catherine was right that there was something off. Her innate decency and honesty is what appeals to him about her. There is definitely a tendency for the heroine to “learn her lesson”, but I think it’s fair to say the hero generally learns something too in a Jane Austen novel – it’s not a one-way street.

I appreciate the criticism of Henry’s squashing Catherine’s intuition and the I’m A Good Mom I Just Cuss A Lot Shirt recognition of the extent to which she was right. I don’t appreciate the antagonist and condescending term mansplaining, but I understand that it’s hard to be polite about about the demeaning, overbearing, controlling behavior it describes.
